woman doing make up with many hands and arms helping her get the job done faster

Do you ever look back on photos of yourself and your friends in your teenage years or early twenties and think ‘god, why did I wear my hair like that?’ Or ‘what was I thinking with that makeup?’ I know I definitely do! In fact there are many times I have wished I could go back in time and give my orange skinned 16 year-old self some much needed beauty advice.

So here are 12 pieces of beauty advice I wish I could give to my younger self:

Tone it down with the fake tan.

less is more. No one likes the orange look and it does NOT make you look hotter stick to just one layer if at all and for the love of god wear gloves when applying it!

Putting foundation on your lips so it blends in with the rest of your face is NOT a good look.

Now days everyone wants to accentuate their lips and make them stand out, there’s a reason for this…it’s because it looks good!

Tone it down with the black eyeliner, the Avril Lavigne look is not doing you any favours.

Again, you want accentuate your features and make your eyes appear bigger not make them smaller. Rimming your eyes with copious amounts of black liner does not make you look cool. Give winged liner a go, it’s called the push up bra for your eyes for a reason.

Tint your eye brows brown.

It will change your life and your face… seriously. When you can’t see your eyebrows in photos of yourself that’s a good sign they need some much needed attention.

Bronzer not meant to be rubbed all over your face.

If you want to look like you have dirt rubbed all over your face then by all means wear copious amounts of bronzer all over your face but if you want to use it for its actual purpose and use it to complement your face shape then stick to your cheek bones. Again less is more.

Throw out the Butterfly clips and sparkly head bands

Trying to fit 50 butterfly clips into your hair is not a good look no matter how ‘in fashion’ it may be at the time. The same goes for sparkly head bands.

Don’t iron your hair with an actual Iron.

The iron is meant for flattening clothes not your hair, you’ll thank me for this in years to come when your hair isn’t dry, brittle and sticking up in random places.

Skip the chunky highlights

Those 3cm wide blonde highlights you put throughout your hair are not a good look, stick with your natural hair colour for as long as possible, you’ll be glad you did when you get older.

Ginger spice was my hair style icon (and I’m not even a red head)

Impulse deodorant is never a good idea

Impulse deodorant is not perfume…enough said.

Let’s tone it down with the hair mouse, shall we?

Your hair should not permanently look like you’ve just hopped out of the shower or then feel like a rock when you touch it. When that guy you had a crush on once asked you ‘why you always have wet hair?’ take that as a hint.

Never use stick on nails.

You know those stick on nails that you insist on wearing? The ones that don’t quite fit your nail shape so you see bits of your real nail on either side of the flimsy bit of plastic that is practically falling off anyway. Yeah you know the ones, stop wearing them.

Go easy on the metallic blue eyeliner, in fact let’s just leave it all together.

Yes the colour itself may be pretty and visually appealing and yes you have been told that blue makes your blue eyes pop but how about wearing a nice blue dress instead.

Now I’d like to hear from you. What beauty advice do you wish you could give to your younger self? Do you have any hilarious photos of your beauty disasters you can share? If you’re game post it on instagram and tag @Metropixie.
